DRUG TITLE Propecia (Finasteride) Propecia is used to cure different types of male pattern baldness typically on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid–scalp area (middle front of head). It is not clear whether the drug can be used to cure a receding hairline on the forehead. The drug is strictly to be used by men and should not be used by women or children. Propecia is to be taken once a day with or without a meal. However, you may take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss. This medicine is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostates. MISSED DOSE You should try and take your doses regularly. But if you do miss a dose, then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust your remaining doses. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, you may skip it and continue with your regular dose. But do not take a double dose. Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. OVERDOSE Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose as the symptoms of an overdose are not known. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES Before taking finasteride, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this drug, or a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart). Finasteride should never be taken for women or children. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin, so women and children not to touch the tablet finasteride. Although finasteride is not intended for use by women, this medication can cause birth defects if a woman takes it during pregnancy. If a woman accidentally takes this medication, rinse your mouth or stomach immediately. Call your doctor immediately if you notice compression, pain, or other changes in mammary. These may be signs of male breast cancer. There may be drugs that interact with finasteride. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking prescription and over-the-counter, as well as vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not take new medication without telling your doctor. SIDE EFFECTS Propecia may cause an allergic reaction leading to symptoms like difficulty in breating, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, face or hives.
